Zamil declares himself as the new Kita president

February 29, 2012
The Kedah Kita chairman says he was elected as the president at a EGM on Saturday in Kota Baru.
PUTRAJAYA: Kedah Kita chairman Zamil Ibrahim has declared himself as the party’s new president and has sent an official report to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) today.
He said the report contained an explanation on several incidents within the party since last month, which led to his selection to lead the party at its extraordinary general meeting (EGM) in Kota Baru last Saturday.
He said the report also clarified the rejection of Kita’s earlier decision to sack several party leaders including himself as Kedah Kita chairman, after the decision was seen as not complying with the party’s constitution.
“I’m confident that ROS can judge for itself and we have provided a chronology of events so that it can see if Zaid Ibrahim (party president) followed the constitution all this while,” he told reporters after presenting the report to ROS here.
On Feb 2, Zaid was reported as saying he wanted to dissolve the party and that formation of the party was a mistake, which was objected to by Kita leaders in several states, and last Saturday Zamil claimed he was chosen to head the party after the EGM decided to reject Zaid’s leadership.
However, Kita secretary Masrum Dayat, in a statement three days ago, said the meeting in Kota Baru on Feb 25 was not a Kita meeting.
Kita, formed about a year ago, was issued a show-cause letter by the ROS on Feb 9 to explain why the party’s registration should not be revoked after flouting several regulations.
Zamil said he felt that the party might be dissolved under the old leadership as he was told that the show-cause letter had not been responded to yet.
He said party members were worried and felt a drastic move was necessary to keep the party intact, which led to their rejection of Zaid’s leadership.
“The ROS said it will evaluate and thoroughly investigate. We will give ROS space to do so, but at the same time our party will continue as usual,” he added.
