Chua not surprised by sudden dissolution of Parti Kita

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek is not surprised by the sudden announcement of the dissolution of Parti Kita.
“When it was formed, the party said it wanted to be the third force – to promote liberal thinking, transparency and democratic government. I’m not surprised that it didn’t last long,” he said.
Dr Chua said while it was easy to form a new party, making it relevant and resilient was difficult.
“I extend my sympathies to (Parti Kita president Datuk Zaid Ibrahim). If you look at Malaysia’s history, so many parties were formed and after a while they all shut down.
“Political parties require people to work hard, funding and the mental stamina to see matters through. It is not easy, even more so now that it’s wartime in Malaysia – political wartime,” he said after attending the Barisan Nasional Wangsa Maju Chinese New Year event yesterday.
However, he said Kita’s dissolution did not mean that Malaysians were rejecting a political “third force” but that they were more interested in bread and butter issues.
Parti Kita, which stands for Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air, was launched as a non-partisan party in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 19 last year.
Zaid had announced on Thursday that the party would be dissolved, stating that forming it was a mistake as it had failed in its aim of being a party that supported moderate and progressive ideas.
This came after a series of episodes, including the sacking of several central committee members and a public apology to Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The announcement has since drawn flak from members, including five state Kita chiefs, who had called on Zaid to step down.
Meanwhile, Dr Chua said MCA had identified its candidates for the coming polls.
Asked if there would be surprises in the line-up, he said: “Every time we release the list, there will always be someone who is surprised.”
